“He’s your Magic Millions winner”: Ashman raves about the talented two-year-old

Will the winner of the 2024 Golden Slipper take to the track on Saturday afternoon?

Shangri La Express for Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott won by over two lengths on debut at the Randwick track and has a chance to back that up in the seventh race at Rosehill.

He has a $2.15 chance at bookmakers to win this event, but if he does, all eyes will be on the futures markets.

Nic Ashman believes he has a great chance for Slipper if Shangri La Express wins.

“He ran the best last 200 meters of the day on his debut and it was a day where we had some pretty skilful horses running, it was a carnival day in Sydney,” he told SEN The Sydney Set.

“His overall time was smooth… that’s a really, really good sign for a two-year-old.

“I think he’s a Magic Millions horse, I think he’s your Magic Millions winner and I think he’ll be one of the favorites for the Golden Slipper.

“It’s $15 for the slipper. If he can win from the outside gate today then I think he will have 100 percent established himself as the best two-year-old so far this season.”

As for Saturday’s race, Shangri La Express made a mistake in Gate 12. Jockey Regan Bayliss is ready to push the colt forward to make up for the wide barrier, but both Ashman and fellow form guru Mick Gannon believe that’s the reason the horse can’t make the current $1.75.

Both recommended a bet if the horse goes up to $2.50+.
