The next session of the Farm Policy and Risk Management webinar series is just around the corner! The series continues to provide educational webinars on U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) insurance programs to help producers understand risk protection options. On Wednesday, December 20, at 1:00 p.m., the Dairy session will focus on insurance and risk management programs designed specifically for dairy farms.
Two different programs are discussed: protecting milk revenues and covering milk margins. Participants address the price risk associated with milk prices and their connection to futures markets. Most importantly, how adverse changes in the prices of milk and dairy products may affect the prices received. The session will focus on how programs can support small and large dairy farmers to address these negative impacts. You'll also learn the importance of working with a knowledgeable insurance agent when deciding which program is best for your business.
The session will also feature a guest speaker. As an educator, Craig Williams has taught youth and adult agriculture and livestock programs for 33 years. He conducts on-farm research and demonstration programs, including corn and soybean variety trials, calf growth programs, and dairy barn ventilation programs. He led the dairy risk management and farm bill education programs for Penn State University's dairy team. Craig also leads and serves as a mortality composting instructor, securing USDA-APHIS grants for training. He was a committee member of the International Symposium on Animal Mortality Management for eight years.
The Farm Policy and Risk Management Series is a free program of Michigan State University Extension. Registration is required to participate. To register today, visit https://events.anr.msu.edu/fprms/.
