Circle is aiming for an IPO after a remarkable year for crypto stocks

Circle, the creator of the USDC stablecoin, has discreetly filed its initial public offering (IPO) application with the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).

This move comes just over a year after it ended its previous plan to go public via a special purpose acquisition company (SPAC). The IPO is pending review by the SEC, with the public listing expected to be “subject to market and other conditions,” according to Thursday's brief press release.

Background and market dynamics

Founded in 2013, Circle gained notoriety as the issuer of USD Coin (USDC), the world's second-largest U.S. dollar-pegged stablecoin, which launched in 2018. USDC has a market capitalization of over $25.2 billion, positioning itself as a major player in the stablecoin realm. Notably, its main competitor Tether has a total value of over $94.6 billion.

According to CNBC, Circle's previous attempt to acquire Concord Acquisition Corp. via a SPAC failed. to go public in 2022, which coincided with a broader downturn in the SPAC market. The deal was originally valued at around $9 billion and was canceled in December of that year, a period marked by the bankruptcy of crypto exchange FTX.

Industry dynamics and new trends

The latest announcement comes with a notable upsurge in support for the cryptocurrency sector. Coinbase, which has held a stake in Circle since August, has seen an incredible 400% increase in value in 2023. Other crypto stocks, including MicroStrategy and Bitcoin miner Marathon Digital, also saw significant rallies.

According to Fin Extra, this development comes in a broader context as the SEC recently approved the first spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs).

With heightened optimism, industry enthusiasts are speculating that a wave of new retail and institutional investors will enter the digital asset market. Shortly before the ETFs began trading on Thursday, Bitcoin briefly rose to over $49,000, reaching levels not seen since December 2021. At the same time, the price of Ether climbed to over $2,600, marking its highest level since May 2022.
