Mahomes has now been at the helm of KC for five seasons.

And in that time, the Chiefs have won the AFC West and hosted the AFC Championship Game every season, as well as three Super Bowl appearances and two championships.

Mahomes has also won two NFL MVP awards (2018 and 2022) with countless viral “Have you seen that” social media appearances.

Not too shabby for a player who will only turn 28 in September.

The Chiefs saw major upheaval this offseason, losing offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy, second-best receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster, and offensive tackles Orlando Brown and Andrew Wylie.

But much like last season, when the Chiefs won it all despite the departure of All-Pro WR Tyreek Hill, those factors will only play in Mahomes’ MVP’s favor if KC enjoys another top-flight season.

Cincinnati Bengals QB Joe Burrow (+750)

Burrow, 26, finished fourth in the 2022 MVP pick after leading the Bengals to the AFC title game.

That’s one Super Bowl loss and one conference championship game loss in two full seasons at the top of the No. 1 draft pick in 2020.

A calf injury saw Burrow sidelined this preseason, but things appear to be on track for the regular season opener on Sept. 10.

If the Cincy QB can improve his key passing stats and keep the Bengals level with the Chiefs, Burrow’s first MVP honor could well be on the cards.

Buffalo Bills QB Josh Allen (+850)

Another AFC rising star, Allen, has guided the Bills to three AFC East titles and four playoff appearances in his five seasons as a starter.

And even more so than his elite AFC quarterback peers, Allen is a dangerous double threat with more than 4,200 yards passing and 400 yards rushing in each of the last three seasons.

MVP voters took notice when Allen finished second (2020) and third (2022) in the vote during that span.

But unlike Mahomes and Burrow, Allen has yet to lead the Bills to the Super Bowl with a mediocre 4-4 playoff record, despite some impressive postseason stats.

The performance of Allen – and the Bills – in their four away games in 2023 against the AFC’s other top contenders (Chiefs, Bengals and Chargers) and MVP favorites (Jalen Hurts’ Eagles) will have a big impact on his MVP destiny have.

Los Angeles Chargers QB Justin Herbert (+1200)

At 25, Herbert is the youngest in the AFC MVP leaderboard quartet.

With a career record of 25-24 and just one playoff appearance – the 31-30 wildcard loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars last January – he is also the least successful player on his three-year résumé.

However, Herbert is considered one of the best pure passing players in the game and was handsomely rewarded this offseason with a five-year contract extension worth $262.5 million.

That makes Herbert the highest-paid player in the league and also increases the pressure on the young QB in 2023 – huge.

Philadelphia Eagles QB Jalen injured (+1200)

In his second full season as a Philly regular, Hurts broke out in eye-opening fashion with 4,461 total offensive yards, 35 total touchdowns and a second-place MVP pick in 15 games.

Hurts eventually took the Eagles to the Super Bowl, where he provided 374 offensive yards and four touchdowns, earning him solid support to become only the second loser in Big Game history to be named MVP.

Overall, Hurts was 16-2 as a starter in 2022, and the motivated quarterback is aiming even higher this season as the Eagles go into the year as the top NFC favorite.

Best bet among NFL MVP favorites

We choose Hurts (+1200) who had the highest ticket MVP percentage (14.0) and has been the biggest drag at BetMGM Sportsbook since August 22nd.

With four of the five MVP favorites based in the AFC, it’s safe to assume that Philly faces less high-profile competition in the NFC, and that could lead to another monster season for the 25-year-old Hurts.
