Today, Wizards of the Coast finally addressed the MTG Arena economy, giving players short-term options while promising possible long-term solutions.
Players have been requesting changes to MTG Arena since the release of the digital card game. And over time, the need for change has become a growing concern for the entire Magic community. Now, WotC has hosted an “Economy Stream” on Twitch to address these player concerns and has provided a related written article.
The purpose of today’s economy discussion, according to WotC, was to start a conversation, not provide immediate solutions to issues that players feel require immediate attention. Alternative options have been uncovered today, although it remains unknown whether these options will improve the economy over time.
Players will soon be able to open special Mythic booster packs that guarantee a Mythic Wildcard or Mythic Rare card in the booster pack. These packs cost 1,300 gold and should be released around the same time as Streets of New Capenna (SNC).
Around the same time as SNC, there will also be a bundle in MTG Arena that will give players the option to buy wildcards directly. The bundle includes 12 Rare and four Mythic Rare Wildcards for $49.99. Players cannot purchase this pack with Gold or Gems. The bundle will only last about six weeks after SNC’s launch, according to Wotc, after which it will be “evaluated.”
WotC also announced that MTG Arena will be in a perpetual, non-rotating format that will not contain Alchemy maps or balance changes to maps in Alchemy and Historic formats that will be released in the near future. A name for this new format was not given, but according to Chris Kirtz it is in the works.
Future savings options discussed within MTG Arena included better rewards for players from Constructed events, alternate daily reward options that don’t require a game to be won, and a persistent mode where players can test cards without having to purchase them with wild cards .
