The state of the nation could shed light on economic policy

President Joe Biden's State of the Union address on Thursday will give him an opportunity to lay out his economic priorities for the coming year.
The economy has grown in recent months as the U.S. posted better-than-expected job growth, a 3.7% unemployment rate and rising inflation. But despite these positive developments, consumers remain depressed about the economy.
A recent Pew Research Center survey shows Americans are paying close attention to health care costs, Social Security and the budget deficit, with nearly three-quarters of respondents ranking the strengthening economy as their top priority this election cycle. Americans also focus on the labor market and global trade.
Biden will likely address some of these concerns in his speech. Economists say he is likely to propose higher tax rates on wealthy individuals, a solution to the budget deficit that he has offered in the past. He is also expected to speak about creating accessible, affordable child care and the work he has done to reduce the debt burden of student loan borrowers.
