We’re powering our economy: The Smart Factory Institute offers cybersecurity tips

CLEVELAND, Tenn. (WDEF) – As more companies do business online, cybersecurity is more important than ever.

That’s why Bradley County’s Smart Factory Institute recently brought in cyber experts from across the country.

They share ways to prevent the criminal use of new technologies like AI.

In this way, too, the institute drives our economy forward.

“Today was very exciting and really focused on critical networks for manufacturers and how important they are to our business,” said Denise Hall, President/CEO of Peak Performance and Smart Factory Institute. “Cyber security, scalability, reliability and integration are important. And all of our speakers today have spoken in those areas. With the recent cyber attack on the state of Chattanooga, it has taken a real hit, and close at hand. That’s why it was really important for the US Department of Homeland Security to speak to us today about how cybercriminals get into our systems and the resources we have to prevent these actions.”

“At Solmax, our cyber security department works very closely with our manufacturing team,” said Tyler Fugate, cyber security engineer at Solmax. “As we heard in some of these speakers today, cyber security and the manufacturing side is very important, probably one of the most important things that companies should be aware of. A few speeches today have mentioned that data is probably our most important asset. In every company, no matter who you work for, you collect data about your customers, your employees and everything else. And data is now a commodity. It’s valuable. So securing that data and your systems is incredibly important.”

“It’s crucial. I think everyone is nervous about it, and they should be,” said Tyler York, CEO of WYRE Technology. “Some people are really proactive and have done a lot to protect themselves. And those who haven’t tend to find out the hard way that it can really ruin their business and cause a lot of financial problems and the employee’s life. Be proactive. Don’t be a victim. Get things done before they become a problem. Invest in good tools. Invest in good people. Invest in good partners. And make sure you verify your partners. Make sure they do a good job and aren’t another vector that becomes a problem.”

“I hope that they have made really good connections that can help them improve their business and that they are able to find good partners to work with,” Hall said.
