Understand a complicated economy

episode details

Some statistics show that the US economy is thriving. The number of employees rose by almost 430,000 in March. Unemployment is 3.6%. Consumer spending and business investment grew strongly in the first quarter of this year. But other statistics are worrying. GDP contracted by 1.4% in the first quarter of 2022. Inflation is at a 40-year high. In addition, tighter fiscal and monetary policies, higher fuel prices and the broader economic impact of the Russian invasion of Ukraine could weigh heavily on growth.

To understand the myriad factors affecting the US economy’s outlook, EconoFact Chats welcomes a panel of respected business journalists – Binyamin Appelbaum from The New York Times, Scott Horsley from NPR, Greg Ip from The Wall Street Journal and Heather Long from The Washington Post Office.
