BRIDGEPORT, W.Va (WDTV) – The study is still in its early stages, but depending on how it goes, Clarksburg’s Main Street and Pike Street may become one-way streets.
They’ve been one-way since the 1950s, but Chris Lane, the owner of the Goff Building on Main Street, believes it will help businesses change it again.
He says too many companies are being ignored by customers on one-way streets and this change will give drivers a fresh perspective.
“I think it will make Clarksburg more accessible,” Lane said. “They default to taking the path of least resistance and going where the majority of consumers in Harrison County go, and that’s right past Clarksburg to Emily Drive in Bridgeport.”
Main Street and Pike Street are state streets. This means that the West Virginia Department of Highways can end up supporting almost all of the project funding.
In addition, the City of Clarksburg was already planning to rebuild these roads next year.
According to Lane, this change could give downtown businesses the extra boost they need.
“This two-way initiative is, in my opinion, the most cost-effective initiative available to the city to make the most meaningful impact,” Lane said.
Lane says that as more traffic has access to easily get around downtown Clarksburg, he believes it will benefit the city economy and attract more people.
