WASHINGTON, Aug 5 (Reuters) – The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) voted 4-0 on Friday to begin drafting new rules on the space economy, issues related to satellite fueling, spacecraft inspection and repair in orbit and the disposal of space debris.
“We believe that the new space age needs new rules,” FCC Chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel said. She said the FCC must “ensure our rules are prepared for the proliferation of satellites in orbit and new activity at our higher altitudes.”
The FCC also plans to explore “new ways to clean up orbital debris. After all, there are thousands of tons of junk in space.”
