The governor’s watered down fish catch is a disservice to the rural economy – Park Rapids Enterprise

As one of four Legislative Members of the Minnesota Tourism Council, I find it extremely disappointing that Governor Tim Walz abandoned the Governor’s Fishing Opener this year as we’ve known it for decades.

This event began in 1948 to improve Minnesota’s economy by promoting the state’s recreational opportunities, particularly fishing.

It usually begins with the designation of a host community a year in advance, with valuable advance advertising, and eventually with dozens of guests – including the media – flocking to a host’s region for days to kick off the new fishing season.

So far this year, very little public information has been released about what exactly the governor’s fishing event will entail. And whatever notice was issued by the administration remains very cryptic and conspicuously lacking in detail.

For example, the DNR states, “The governor will execute a press executive order in Chippewa National Forest,” without specifying where in this 1.6 million-acre forest it will occur.

Also, “The governor will be fishing on a lake on the Leech Lake Indian Reservation” is extremely vague since the reservation is 973 square miles and has over 338 square miles of water.

How is this open to the public and how is it helping our tourism industry in the spirit of this once great event?

The official line from the Walz administration seems to be, no, they are not “ending” the Governor’s Fishing Opener, they are just taking a “different” approach.

You can twist it any way you want, but let’s just say that this year’s Governor’s Fishing Opener will not offer a single community in the Minnesota metro area an opportunity to enjoy the spotlight or expand a much-needed presence in our state’s tourism industry.

As a small tourism business owner located within the boundaries of the Leech Lake Reservation and Chippewa National Forest, I find this very disappointing.

I am closely associated with the tourism industry in the region and have heard from many people that they are offended by the governor’s actions. That doesn’t look good for an officer.

As far as I can remember, this event was always a bipartisan affair, with olive branches spread even in the midst of heated negotiations in the Capitol.

It was a platform to show Minnesotans that despite political differences, we can come together in the great Minnesota tradition of opener fishing and be united in our love of the great outdoors.

This year’s faux opener offers nothing but a cheap photo op for our governor mingling with handpicked Minnesotans. Our governor has made it a habit to turn his back on the Minnesota metro area, and it only reinforces that reputation. It exacerbates the country-big-city divide he created, eroding any remaining traces of credibility for his “One Minnesota.”

The Governor’s Fishing Opener was never about how many fish the governor can catch, it was about sharing what’s good in our state and helping grow our economy. That’s the spirit of the Governor’s Fishing Opener, something he needs to remember and something we need to reclaim for the betterment of our state’s tourism industry.
