MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WBTW) – The City of Myrtle Beach said holiday shopping is having a big impact on its economy and many businesses.
Myrtle Beach makes up about 2% of Horry County’s land area but contributes about 40% of retail sales.
More than 10,000 companies operate within the city limits. Some are located in the Market Common or the Coastal Grand Mall.
Coty spokesman Mark Kruea said both large corporate branches and small local businesses are benefiting from the economy, but the city is seeing a greater impact from corporate branches.
He said when businesses do well, the entire community does well.
“The fact that we have so many visitors spending so much money here,” Kruea said. “It helps that we locals don’t have to pay higher taxes. So we have the advantage of being like Broadway on the beach, and you know all the nice amenities, the ballpark, you know the convention center.”
Kruea said the money tourists spend is one of the reasons Myrtle Beach residents get a property tax credit.
