According to a recent study, arts and culture in Guilford County accounted for $240 million in economic activity in 2022.
The study was commissioned by the Arts Council of Greater Greensboro, Creative Greensboro (the City of Greensboro's Office of Arts and Culture), and the High Point Arts Council.
The Arts & Economic Prosperity 6 study found that arts and culture direct economic activity in Guilford County totaled $240 million in industry spending in 2022, including $235 million in the city of Greensboro.
According to the study, the arts and culture industry in Guilford County accounted for 4,335 jobs and contributed $134 million to the personal income of Guilford County residents.
The study, conducted by Americans for the Arts, found that event-related spending by arts and culture audiences totaled $133.8 million. This figure comes to $38.88 spent per person per event. Local participants paid an average of US$29.02 per person per event and foreign participants paid US$53.43. Expenses included food, beverages, retail purchases, lodging, transportation, clothing, groceries and more.
The Americans for the Arts survey included more than just dollars and cents and revealed a deep appreciation for the social impact of arts and culture in the community.
The majority of respondents expressed a desire to preserve cultural activities for future generations and were proud of the venues, which they viewed as an essential part of the community.
The study included 78 of the 152 eligible nonprofit arts and cultural organizations in Guilford County and was able to illustrate the complex economic interdependencies within the local economy. The study revealed far-reaching impacts that go well beyond initial expenditures.
