Stripe convinces of Web Economy

Stripe’s businesses will process more than $817 billion in 2022, the payments company announced on Wednesday (April 5).

In the company’s annual user letter, co-founders and brothers Patrick Collison and John Collison noted that that number was up 26% from the previous year.

“This is a significant slowdown from the breakneck growth we’ve seen in 2020 and 2021,” the Collisons wrote. “At the same time, we are as confident as ever about the long-term prospects of the internet economy, and we are heartened by the steady advancement of the millions of businesses we serve in the face of banking crises, war, plague, energy shocks, supply chain issues, inflation and general volatility. “

The letter states that more than 100 companies process more than $1 billion in payments with Stripe each year, with that rate growing by over 50% annually since 2018.

Over the past year, the number of new businesses using Stripe has also increased by 19%. America remains the company’s largest market, though 55% of the companies that joined Stripe last year came from outside the United States

The letter came weeks after reports that Stripe had raised $6.5 billion in a funding round that valued the payments company at $50 billion. That valuation was lower than the $95 billion valuation Stripe achieved in 2021.

“Funds raised will be used to provide liquidity to current and former employees and to meet employee withholding obligations related to stock awards, resulting in the retirement of Stripe stock, which will offset the issuance of new shares to Series I investors ‘ the company said at the time. “Stripe doesn’t need this capital to run its business.”

In early March, there were reports that Stripe’s funding round was fueled by a $3.5 billion tax bill. Stripe Slashed has been internally rated three times since 2022. This lower price deviates from the valuation set by investors.

Stripe’s letter also discussed the company’s partnership with ChatGPT inventor OpenAI and the broader artificial intelligence (AI) revolution.

“This wave of innovation is happening on Stripe,” the letter reads. “We analyzed the numbers, and a significant majority of the AI startups featured in one of the broadest we could find use Stripe.”

PYMNTS spoke to Stripe’s Head of Information and Data Science, Emily Glassberg Sands, last month about the partnership.

“We drive [OpenAI’s] monetization strategy and [OpenAI is helping] Stripe has evolved from our initial activity as a pure payments focus to a finance one-stop shop [for the digital economy]’ Sands said.
