South Korea’s finance minister and Chinese ambassador discuss economic cooperation

SEOUL, May 19 (Reuters) – South Korea’s finance minister was scheduled to hold a meeting with the Chinese ambassador to the country on Friday to discuss economic cooperation, among other things, the Seoul Ministry of Finance said.

South Korea’s ambassador in Washington said earlier this month Seoul will soon begin top-level talks with Beijing amid rising diplomatic tensions between the two neighboring economic powerhouses over geopolitical issues.

No further details were given in a brief statement, except that Minister Choo Kyung-ho, also Deputy Prime Minister, was scheduled to meet with Chinese Ambassador Xing Haiming for 30 minutes from 9:30 a.m. (0030 GMT) at a government building in central Seoul.

Economically, South Korea was hit hard by the slump in exports to China. Shipments have declined year-on-year in 12 of the last 13 months.
