BROOKINGS, SD – The big game may be in Texas, but the excitement in Brookings has been building all season long.
With tens of thousands of people attending each home game, football season has provided a major boost to Brookings' economy.
“If we can bring 18,000 fans to the city for a football match, our economy will definitely benefit and several companies have mentioned this. It's really fun to look at the numbers. If you look at the months of September and November, when we had more home games than October, we saw a 12% increase in our sales tax revenue compared to last year, which is huge for a community our size. It was really fun to see,” said Kelsey Doom, president and CEO of the Brookings Area Chamber of Commerce.
The team's success has impacted several companies, including Outlaw Graphics. They teamed up with Lance Trucking in Volga to design a semi-truck that would bring the football equipment to Frisco.
“I think a lot of them were speechless. It's kind of a professional thing. “You get the trailer that has all your logos and all the football stuff on it,” said Todd Standish of Outlaw Graphics.
SDSU fan buses depart from SD
Places like Cubby's Sports Bar and Grill expect to be packed to capacity during Sunday afternoon's game.
“Sunday we will be a full house. I expect standing room. We have taken some reservations, just a few, so we have enough space for walk-ins, although we expect a full house,” said Chris Stoltenberg, general manager of Cubby's Sports Bar and Grill.
All the hustle and bustle makes for a more united community.
“It creates a great sense of community, a sense of camaraderie, a sense of unity. There was a lot of fun. We lined up along 6th St. to watch the five charter buses drive down 6th St. It was a lot of fun,” Doom said.
