Green economy is the key to sustainable growth

Hanoi (VNA) – Vietnam and many international organizations are focusing on promoting green economic initiatives with the aim of reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by at least 55% by 2025 and becoming carbon neutral by 2050.
At the Green Economy Forum (GEF) 2023, held recently in Hanoi, the government welcomed and supported key European Union (EU) policies and initiatives to strengthen business-to-business collaboration to achieve green agreements as well as maritime and digital economy strategies.
Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh stressed that Vietnam and the EU share the new vision, new mindset, new determination and drastic measures for green growth and development.
Vietnam is focusing on accelerating three strategic breakthroughs in the areas of institutions, infrastructure and human resources and promoting growth based on technology and innovation, he said.
Vietnam was one of the four signatories of the political declaration establishing the Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP) with G7 countries and international partners, including the EU.
With its rich natural resources of wind energy and solar energy, Vietnam is ready to share its potential and strengths and work with EU partners to promote the transition to green energy and the development of renewable energy and green hydrogen, the prime minister said.
Meanwhile, EU Ambassador to Vietnam Julien Guerrier said that thanks to policies and solutions to support the development of a green economy and response to climate change, greenhouse gas emissions in the EU fell by about 2.5% last year, while the The Union’s economic growth increased by 3.5%. This is evidence that successfully reducing greenhouse gas emissions while maintaining global economic growth is possible, he explained.
He said that with its commitment to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050, Vietnam has the same interest as the EU in transitioning to a green and low-carbon economy, which contributes to shaping the bilateral partnership.
Through the JETP mechanism, the EU will provide Vietnam with significant resources to accompany the country, he said.
Guerrier emphasized that the pursuit of sustainable economic growth presents both opportunities and challenges. It will open up new avenues for innovation, job creation and economic growth, enabling the building of a stronger and more inclusive society. On the other hand, current systems and ways of thinking are being re-evaluated in order to move towards sustainable production and consumption models.
By promoting cooperation between public authorities and the private sector, the EU and Vietnam could unlock the potential to create a greener, more prosperous future, he said.
The ambassador also stressed the need for the business community of both sides to discuss measures to fully exploit the benefits of the EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA) to strengthen the bilateral trade partnership.
He advised European companies to consider increasing investments and setting up research centers in Vietnam in new areas such as renewable energy, digital transformation, smart agriculture and low-emission industry. This will help make Vietnam an innovation center and a regional research center in the field of green transformation and form a green hydrogen value chain in Vietnam./.
