Poll: Americans trust the GOP in fighting inflation and the economy, but prefer pro-choice candidates over pro-life

Americans have more faith in Republicans to address economic issues ahead of the November midterm elections, but a nearly majority of Americans said they would be more likely to support a candidate who advocates access to abortion than one who does it doesn’t, according to a new survey.

The ABC News/Ipsos poll found that Americans trust the GOP over Democrats by a nine-point margin when it comes to the economy (34 percent to 25 percent), while 49 percent of respondents said they would be more likely to support vote for a candidate who “prefers”. Keeping abortion legal and available” compared to just 27 percent who prefer a candidate who “supports restricting abortion except to protect the mother’s life”.

The results come after a July report showed US GDP contracted for a second straight quarter from April to June, suggesting the economy has entered a technical recession, and after the Supreme Court ruled Roe v. Wade, which protected access to abortion services.

The poll found that just 12 percent of Americans believe the economy is recovering, while 69 percent believe the country’s financial health will deteriorate. Republicans are also seen as more competent than Democrats when it comes to tackling gas prices, according to the poll, by a nine-point margin (33 percent to 24 percent).

When asked which party would do a better job of fighting inflation, 33 percent trusted Republicans to do the job, while only 23 percent said Democrats. Inflation hit 9.1% in June, the highest in the US in 40 years.

Over the weekend, the Senate passed the 2022 Inflation Mitigation Act in a party-line vote, with Vice President Kamala Harris casting the casting vote.

Republicans have expressed major concern about the bill after a study by the Joint Committee on Taxation (JCT) found that the bill would increase taxes on Americans’ incomes under $400,000. The legislation would also reportedly increase IRS funding to deploy 87,000 agents to expedite tax audits.

According to the poll, which was conducted as before the Senate vote on the anti-inflation bill, just 29 percent of the adults polled support Biden’s handling of inflation.

The poll also found that 37 percent of Americans said they approve of the way Biden is handling the economic recovery, a number unchanged since the last poll in June.

The ABC News/Ipsos poll was conducted August 5-6, 2022 with an error margin of plus or minus 4.2 percentage points and a 95% confidence level.
