About 7 in 10 Americans say the country’s economy is in bad shape, according to a new poll by the Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research.
According to the new poll, a majority of Americans don’t blame President Joe Biden for high gas prices, but they do see his economic leadership as poor as inflation continues to ravage their savings and spending power.
According to the survey, less than half of Americans polled believe the rise in gas prices is Biden’s fault. The Associated Press reported that this is a “reflection of how the [United States] dealing with Russian President Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine and the resulting rise in oil prices.”
The Associated Press went on to say that “the polls point to a paradox in which the public views Biden as in power without necessarily being in control. [Biden’s] Hopes for a lasting economic renaissance have faded as Americans cope with higher food and energy costs. And the promise of a country no longer under the influence of the pandemic has been replaced by the uncertainty of war in Europe.”
According to the survey, 65 percent of Americans currently disapprove of Biden’s handling of the economy. 96% of Republicans and 36% of Democrats polled disagree, and the total number of people saying they disagree has increased from 57% in December and 47% in July 2021.
Most Americans surveyed were concerned about 40 years of high inflation rates impacting the rising cost of living.
68% of respondents said they were “very concerned” about the rapidly rising petrol price, while 59% said they were also concerned about rising food prices.
Adam Newago, a 53-year-old truck driver from Eau Claire, Wisconsin, said, “It’s going to get worse before it gets better.”
Newago said he sees inflation spiraling out of control as rising fuel costs spill over into other parts of the economy, affecting prices across the board for everyone, everywhere.
48% of Americans polled in the new poll believe Biden administration policies hurt the economy, while 24% believe policies help the government; 28% of respondents believe that government policies have not made much of a difference.
80% of Democrats say high gas prices are beyond Biden’s control, while 79% of Republicans specifically blame his policies for rising costs and limiting energy production.
In general, the consensus among Republicans is that Biden’s policies are hurting America’s economy, while Democrats are divided over whether they believe the government is either helping the economy or making no difference.
