DUBOIS – Penn Highlands Healthcare provides outstanding medical care to Pennsylvanians while significantly driving the Commonwealth's economy.
According to the Hospital and Healthsystem Association of Pennsylvania (H`), the eight Penn Highlands hospitals in northwest, central and southwest Pennsylvania provided a total benefit of more than $1.8 billion to the Pennsylvania economy in fiscal year 2022 represents.
This benefit includes $836.6 million in hospital expenses for goods and services necessary to provide health care services and support hospital operations, as well as employee salaries, wages and benefits.
In fiscal year 2022, Penn Highlands Healthcare employed approximately 6,200 employees. In addition to the direct impact, the ripple effect contributed more than $991.2 million to Pennsylvania's economy through business interactions with other industries as well as the economic activity resulting from the circulation of hospital funds throughout the Commonwealth.
Impact on Northwestern Pennsylvania
As H` reports, the four Penn Highlands Healthcare hospitals in northwestern Pennsylvania – Penn Highlands Brookville, Penn Highlands Clearfield, Penn Highlands DuBois and Penn Highlands Elk – provided total economic benefit of more than $999.8 million in fiscal year 2022 the regional economy.
According to the U.S. Department of Commerce's Bureau of Economic Analysis, economic spending for Penn Highlands Brookville totaled $33.3 million. Penn Highlands Brookville has 179 employees.
In addition to the direct impact, the ripple effect contributed more than $20 million to the regional economy, for a total benefit of $53.3 million to Penn Highlands Brookville.
In fiscal year 2022, Penn Highlands Clearfield's economic benefit was more than $43.8 million. The hospital employs 259 people. Penn Highlands Clearfield's ripple effect generated $26.4 million, totaling more than $70.2 million in benefits to the regional economy.
For Penn Highlands DuBois, the U.S. Department of Commerce's Bureau of Economic Analysis reported economic spending totaling $482.4 million. Penn Highlands DuBois employs 2,161 people.
The ripple effect contributed more than $290.3 million to the regional economy, for a total benefit of $772.7 million for Penn Highlands DuBois.
Penn Highlands Elk also contributed significantly to the economy of northwestern Pennsylvania. In fiscal year 2022, Penn Highlands Elk's economic benefit was more than $64.7 million. The hospital employs 414 people.
Penn Highlands Elk's ripple effect generated $39 million, totaling more than $103.7 million in benefits to the regional economy.

Penn Highlands Healthcare is continually recruiting new physicians and providers for Penn Highlands Brookville, Penn Highlands Clearfield, Penn Highlands DuBois and Penn Highlands Elk.
Since 2022, the health system has welcomed 104 physicians and advanced practice providers to the Northwest region and expanded specialties from family medicine to thoracic surgery.
Additionally, hospitals are modernizing their facilities while introducing advanced therapies and cutting-edge technology to ensure even higher levels of care and greater patient satisfaction.
As part of its $180 million Master Facilities Plan, which began in 2018, major expansion and renovation projects were completed to modernize, improve and expand services.
A three-story medical office building has been constructed at Penn Highlands Brookville to house primary and specialty care superclinics.
The emergency room was relocated to Penn Highlands Clearfield and expanded. Penn Highlands DuBois opened a state-of-the-art, two-story emergency department and was accredited as a Level II trauma center.
Other recent improvements at Penn Highlands DuBois include three major construction projects, including the West Wing Special Services Annex; the Center of Excellence, a three-story high-volume specialty services center; and the Stern Center for Behavioral Health at Penn Highlands DuBois East Campus. Penn Highlands Elk Pinecrest Manor received upgrades to its common areas and living areas.
Additionally, the Ridgway Community Medical Building is currently under construction and will conveniently provide primary and specialty services in one location.
