North Carolina is among states receiving a $1.4 million grant to ensure people living in rural areas have equal access to infrastructure and equal economic opportunity. The US Department of Agriculture made the announcement Friday as part of the Biden-Harris administration’s commitment. Check out Saturday morning’s headlines above. State officials said the investment will expand economic opportunity and improve access to housing for underserved rural residents throughout Tar Heel State. Among the five projects, Yadkin and Surry County received a portion of the USDA grant. In Yadkin County, Rural Faith Development Community Development Corp. Use a $250,000 Rural Community Development Initiative grant to provide funds to create and improve job opportunities for people. “Providing housing, infrastructure and educational services to children, families and individuals in rural America helps expand economic opportunity and create good jobs for generations to come,” said State Secretary Reginald Speight. In Surry County, the Surry Medical Ministries Foundation Inc. will use a $500,000 disaster grant for community facilities to purchase a 9,342-square-foot building to continue providing free basic care to uninsured, low-income residents. The structure will have six examination rooms, a pharmacy and additional services available such as financial advisors and nurses.
