More Americans believe the United States is the world’s leading economy this year than in 2021, new polls show.
A Gallup poll found that 44 percent of Americans now believe the U.S. is leading the global economy, up 7 percent from 37 who said the same thing in 2021.
In the same two-year span, the percentage of Americans who see China as the leading economy fell eight points, from 50 percent in 2021 to 42 percent this year, putting Washington two points ahead of Beijing.
In 2020, the year the COVID-19 pandemic broke out in Wuhan, China, significantly more Americans viewed the US as the top economic powerhouse over China — 50 to 39 percent — but China had previously for more than a decade took the lead.
44 percent of Americans said they predict the US will lead the world economy in 20 years, while 37 percent say it will be China.

The poll results come amid heightened tensions between the US and China. The poll, conducted Feb. 1-23, coincided with the US shooting down of a Chinese surveillance balloon that was floating through American airspace and concerns that China might be arming Russia in its war against Ukraine.
The US struggled but showed resilience amid high inflation and recession fears, while China reopened its borders to boost its economy after the pandemic shut down.
The Gallup poll, conducted Feb. 1-23, surveyed 1,008 US adults and had a plus or minus 4 percentage point sampling error.
