MINOT AIR FORCE BASE – Minot Air Force Base contributed $621.6 million to the local economy in fiscal year 2023. That was an increase of $26.6 million from fiscal year 2022, when the base's economic impact was $595 million.
Maj. Andrew Triplett, commander of the base's 5th Control Squadron, presented the annual economic impact analysis report to members of the Minot Area Chamber EDC Military Affairs Committee at its meeting Thursday in Minot.
The report is being prepared to inform community leaders about the air base's impact on the local area.
The Audit Squadron explained how the data is generated in a statement to The Minot Daily News:
“The 5th BW Comptroller Squadron collects information regarding Minot AFB's organizational purchases, contracts, utilities and construction, as well as personnel numbers and their pay from various sources. All of this data is then compiled and analyzed according to the Air Force's official directives. According to Department of Defense standards, multipliers such as the indirect jobs multiplier were developed based on the size of the employment base for each region surrounding an installation and the installation’s mission set.”
According to the report, Minot AFB had a total workforce of 11,827 as of September 30, 2023. This number includes 5,413 military personnel (5,391 active members and 22 Air Force Reserves), 5,416 family members and 998 civilians (federal employees and others) in the base's workforce.
Of the 5,413 military personnel, 3,592 live off base in surrounding communities. Of the 5,416 family members, 2,787 live off base.
In fiscal year 2023, the base's annual payroll totaled $420.3 million; Annual expenditures for construction, services and procurement of materials, equipment and supplies totaled $84.2 million.
A total of 1,995 indirect jobs were created in the Minot area. The number of indirect jobs is determined based on an estimated average annual wage of $58,656, resulting in an estimated annual dollar value of jobs created of $117,018,720.
In addition to the overall economic impact and not part of the economic models, retired military pay is. The Minot area has 1,492 retired military personnel, most from the Air Force, with a gross payroll of $40.6 million.
Triplett said the economic impact for fiscal year 2023 was 4.3% higher than for fiscal year 2022. He said some key factors that contributed included increases in overall payroll and construction, services – and expenses.
Impact of more than $3 billion
Since fiscal year 2019, Minot Air Force Base has contributed more than $3 billion to the economy of Minot and the region.

– Fiscal 2021: $606.8 million
– Fiscal 2022: $595 million
– Fiscal 2023: $621.6 million
