Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-California) told Republican members of the House of Representatives last week that he expects to take a short-term measure to fund the government beyond the end of the fiscal year on September 30, thus preventing what would happen first government shutdown in years.
But the latest list of demands for a rolling resolution from hard-line Conservatives is putting pressure on GOP leaders in the House of Representatives, who can only afford to lose a handful of votes With their slim majority, they pass all bills without democratic support.
In a draft press release obtained by The Hill, the group stated that its members would oppose any spending measure that did not address this three policy areas: the border, the “arming” of the Justice Department and the FBI, and the “woke” politics of the military.
The Freedom Caucus wants any emergency solution “to include the Secure the Border Act of 2023 passed by the House of Representatives to stem the uncontrolled influx of illegal migrants, combat the evils of human trafficking, and stem the tide of dangerous fentanyl into our communities.”
The faction also signaled opposition to President Biden’s request for additional funds to help Ukraine fight the Russian invasion.
