BBestselling author and spiritual guru Marianne Williamson launched her 2024 campaign with a fiery speech that devastated the economic system across the United States.
Williamson rattled off a slew of complaints about how working-class families are struggling with staggering living costs and poverty while the rich get richer, criticized the economic system as “sociopathic” and insinuated that President Joe Biden didn’t go far enough during a passionate speech at Union Station in the heart of Washington, DC

“Let me tell you something. It’s not real capitalism, it’s not a free market economy — it’s a sociopathic economic system,” she explained.
Her campaign debut makes her the first major Democrat to step into the ring. Though she didn’t mention Biden by name in her roughly 20-minute speech, she sometimes alluded to him, suggesting that his presidency was a step in the right direction but woefully inadequate.
“I’m so glad President Trump didn’t win the last election. That means we didn’t go over the cliff … but we’re still four inches away,” she said. “I’ve run for president before. I’m not naive. I am not naïve to the forces that have no intention of allowing anyone to enter this competition who does not adhere to their predetermined agenda.”
Williamson touched on many progressive issues, arguing that the US was plagued by many problems such as “hate and division,” and placing the blame specifically on the country’s elites and technocrats who are content with starving poor children.
Williamson recalled the US founding, which she described as resulting from a split dichotomy between the deep Enlightenment of the Founding Fathers and the moral crime of slavery, and called on her supporters to face the onslaught of injustices plaguing the nation.
“Yes, we need to identify the problems of the past, but we also need to identify the problem solvers of the past. We responded to slavery with abolition, we responded to the institutionalized oppression of women with the women’s rights movement,” she said. “It’s our turn.”
The room was packed with a few hundred listeners, ranging from enthusiastic supporters to curious observers.
“The adversary is not a particular situation or circumstance. The opponent is the economic mindset, an economic mindset that in the last 50 years – in the last 48 years – there’s been $50 trillion in wealth [that] transferred from the bottom 90% to the top 1%,” she said.
It was widely expected that Williamson would debut her campaign on Saturday. After her campaign announcement, she will begin a campaign blitz in the early primary states, beginning with South Carolina, New Hampshire, Nevada and Michigan, according to a campaign worker.
Biden has long been the party’s favorite for the nomination, while virtually every other heavyweight Democrat suppresses enthusiasm that they could challenge the incumbent. Biden has yet to officially declare his campaign, but he has claimed he intends to run for a second term. His announcement is rumored to come next month.
“You can appreciate what the President did — defeating the Republicans in 2020 — and still feel like it’s time to move on,” Williamson recently told a local New Hampshire radio program, according to the news outlet.

At 80, Biden is the oldest president in US history, and he would be 82 at the start of a hypothetical second term and 86 at the end.
Williamson vied to be the party’s flag-bearer in the 2020 primary, but dropped out before rallies and primaries were held, supporting Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT). She has consistently turned to the progressive flank of the Democratic Party.
