Lenovo is committed to an end-to-end product circular economy

What does sustainable design mean and what does this path look like for companies like Lenovo?

Sustainable design is all about reducing the carbon footprint of products, promoting the use of circular materials and incorporating sustainability through the use of innovation for continuous improvement in the development of products and services.

Lenovo is an industry leader in the use of post-consumer recycled plastics (PCC) and closed-loop PCC (PCC from end-of-life IT and electronic equipment) in the manufacture of devices and accessories. In fact, by fiscal year 2025/26, we will use 300 million pounds of post-consumer recycled plastic material in our products, with 100% of our PC products containing post-consumer recycled material. In fiscal year 22/23, 298 Lenovo products were manufactured from closed-loop PCC recycled materials. Notably, we worked with Sony Semiconductor Solutions Corporation to develop a PC adapter with an industry-leading 90% PCC.

Our product take-back programs make it easy for many customers around the world to recycle their old devices, batteries and packaging. We support the demand for recycled electronics by using closed-loop PCC in our own products.

What central role does sustainability play in packaging?

The key to creating more environmentally friendly packaging is to increase the use of recycled and recyclable materials, reduce size and expand the use of bulk and reusable solutions.

By 2025, at Lenovo we will make 90% of the plastic packaging for our PC products and 60% of our smartphone packaging from recycled materials and also introduce plastic-free packaging. We will produce 100% of our smartphone products and accessories free of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and brominated flame retardants (BFRs), while using 50% less single-use plastics and reducing the size/volume of our smartphone packaging by 10%.

It’s innovations like these that make packaging more sustainable and help support our customers’ sustainability goals.

How is Lenovo committed to end-to-end sustainability?

Recycling plays a key role in our sustainability journey, and to date we have used more than 130 million pounds of net recycled plastic and 18 million pounds of closed-loop recycled content in our products and packaging. However, end-to-end sustainability encompasses much more than that and spans the entire enterprise across devices, data center solutions and services.

For example, to support our vision of achieving net zero by 2050, Lenovo ISG develops solutions to promote the energy efficiency of our products and our customers. Innovations like the Neptune Liquid Cooling Solution, a direct water cooling solution, recycle hot water circuits to cool data center systems. It enables customers to reduce power consumption by up to 40% and achieve a 3.5x improvement in thermal efficiency compared to traditional air-cooled systems. Additionally, Lenovo Value Recovery is a sustainability service that helps reduce e-waste and enables the purchase of refurbished and re-certified business hardware at an affordable price. In this way, we ensure that we consistently support customers on their path to sustainability.

In fiscal year 2022/23, we increased participation in the circular economy and integrated closed-loop post-consumer recycled content into 50 additional product lines, resulting in a total of nearly 300 (298) products containing this content recycled from end-users becomes. of vital IT equipment.

What tips do you have for companies looking to incorporate sustainability into their design practices, both in terms of products, packaging and partnerships?

When it comes to improving corporate sustainability, companies must look at the entire organization. For example, at Lenovo we pay attention not only to PC products such as ThinkPads, but also to the design of our servers, with which we will achieve a 50% improvement in energy efficiency by the 2029/30 financial year.

Additionally, it is important to think about how companies can maintain their sustainability even after the products and services are purchased. At Lenovo, our Solutions and Services Group (SSG) connects our business. As part of this, the team offers sustainability services after the purchase of devices. And by 2025, we will enable the recycling and reuse of 363 million kilograms of end-of-life products and ensure that 76% of repairable PC parts returned to our service centers are repaired for future use.
