The kah.na.v’aw Project the Academy of Arts of the World uses research and production in Rio de Janeiro and Cologne to explore the diverse dimensions of Carnival, with a particular focus on its connections to spirituality, economics and politics. The project is an expression of Carnival’s enduring power to unite diverse social groups, celebrate cultural heritage and overcome boundaries. Under the artistic direction of Adriana Schneider Alcure and Alex Mello, numerous events invite you to dance, sing and reflect.
Carnival is not only a popular occasion for celebration at different latitudes and longitudes around the world. Carnival itself is also a socio-political event. Fundamental developments and changes of a political and social nature can be derived from the history of carnival. In addition to Cologne, Cologne’s sister city Rio des Janeiro is also a famous carnival city. Of particular interest in the case of Rio de Janeiro – in relation to Carnival – is the connection between the levels of spirituality, economics and politics. The project kah.na.v’aw would like to reflect this connection between Cologne and the Rhineland. Last but not least, the roots of the Brazilian carnival and migration in Cologne and the Rhineland will be of central importance.
Until December 2023, Workshops, listening sessions, a film program and a round table as well as a performative symposium will take place within this framework in cooperation with various institutions and migrant associations in the city of Cologne. The artistic direction of the project is Adriana Schneider Alcure, member of the ADKDW Academy, founding member of the Cordão do Boitatá Carnival Association and professor of theater at the University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), as well as the Brazilian film and theater director and actress and theater teacher Alex Mello , who lives in Cologne and Bonn.
