KET’s Kentucky Tonight, moderated by Renee Shaw, brings together a panel of experts to conduct an in-depth analysis of key Commonwealth issues.

This weekly program features in-depth discussions with lawmakers, stakeholders and policymakers, moderated by award-winning journalist Renee Shaw. Viewers are often streamed live and are encouraged to participate by submitting questions in real time via email, Twitter or KET’s online form.
For nearly three decades, Kentucky Tonight has been a source for comprehensive and balanced coverage of the most pressing and important public affairs developments in the state of Kentucky.

Kentucky Tonight was awarded a regional Emmy by the Ohio Valley Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences in 1997. The series also received a regional Emmy nomination in 1995.

Renee Shaw is anchor and director of public affairs at Kentucky Educational Television and currently serves as anchor of KET’s Kentucky Tonight, Connections, Election Coverage, Legislative Update and KET Forums.

Since joining KET in 1997, Shaw has produced numerous KET public affairs series and specials, including KET’s nationally acclaimed legislative coverage. Under her leadership, KET has expanded its portfolio of public affairs content to include coverage of the Kentucky Supreme Court, town hall-style forums and cross-platform programming initiatives on topics such as opioid addiction and youth mental health.

An award-winning journalist, Shaw has received top honors from the Ohio Valley Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, two regional Emmy awards, and an award from the Kentucky Associated Press for political reporting on the state legislature. She was inducted into the Kentucky Civil Rights Hall of Fame in 2017. She was honored with a Coretta Scott King Spirit of Ivy Award from the AKA Beta Gamma Omega Chapter; received the 2019 State Media Award from the Kentucky Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution; In 2019, she was named a Charles W. Anderson Awardee by the Kentucky Staff Cabinet to recognize her significant contributions to addressing socioeconomic issues; received the 2014 Anthony Lewis Media Award from the Kentucky Department of Public Advocacy for her work on criminal justice reform; and received the 2015 Green Dot Award for her reporting on domestic violence, sexual assault and human trafficking.

In 2018, KET received a national media award from Mental Health America for its multidimensional content on the Shaw-led opioid epidemic. That same year, she co-produced and hosted a six-part series on young people’s mental health, which was awarded first place in the Educational Content category by NETA, the National Educational Telecommunications Association. In 2019, Shaw was named one of the 50 Most Notable Women in Kentucky Politics and Government by the Kentucky Gazette. In addition, Renee received the Charles W. Anderson Laureate Award from the Kentucky Personnel Cabinet, which recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to solving socioeconomic problems.
