The type of business that’s here right now also makes a difference. Blair said companies often look to locations where similar businesses are based, which can streamline the supply chain and provide opportunities for collaboration.
Room to grow is also important. Blair said they’re trying to help companies find properties that are larger than they need to start with. “Sixty percent of Mason’s businesses have expanded at least once,” she said, “and 40 percent of those have expanded more than once.”
She also said that whether they are part of the economic development staff or provide other services to residents, all city employees are focused on making Mason a great place to live and do business.
“Everyone in the City of Mason is engaged in economic development. Helping businesses get here and thrive is part of our culture and mindset,” Blair said.
These companies produce a wide range of goods, some of which have probably already been used by most of us and others that are very specialized. For example, AtriCure makes medical devices aimed at people with heart problems, particularly atrial fibrillation. Mitsubishi Automotive builds alternators and starters that are used in a wide range of automobile brands.
Vega, a recent addition to Mason’s 500-acre research and development park, produces instrumentation for a wide range of users, from the US Navy to municipal sewage systems. A new company coming to Mason, PCC/SPS, makes fasteners to attach an airplane’s metal skin to the airplane’s frame.
Production is an integral part of the community. In fact, more than 1200 acres of land in Mason are dedicated to technology and advanced manufacturing. That’s about 45% of the city. And strong manufacturing companies help Mason thrive through a good tax base, a supply of available jobs, and employers who give back to the community.
