India has made great efforts to grow its economy and become a higher-income country, Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar said, expressing hope that it will be the fastest-growing major economy this year despite growing at least 7% the world will be the challenges of the Ukraine crisis.

Mr. Jaishankar arrived in Saudi Arabia on September 10 for a three-day visit to discuss ways to further strengthen ties between the two countries. It is his first visit as foreign minister to Saudi Arabia.

“Started my visit to Saudi Arabia by interacting with our community. Appreciated the contribution of our diaspora in addressing national challenges. I spoke to them about our country’s resilience, especially during the time of COVID-19 and the national transformation that is underway in India. ‘ Mr Jaishankar tweeted.

Speaking to the Indian community here on Saturday, Mr Jaishankar said, “India is considering how to change its credit, banking, education and labor policies.” He said India has made great efforts to grow its economy and to become a higher-income country.

“Much of this required vision and prudent management of our tax resources,” he said.

“Many major reforms have been implemented and we can see the result of this in two very interesting developments. In the year ended March 31, 2021 we have recorded the highest export ever. Our total exports were US$670 billion.

Trade in goods was $400 billion,” he said.

He pointed out that the world faces many challenges such as rising food, oil and shipping prices due to the Ukraine crisis.

“But we are still very confident that India will be the fastest growing major economy in the world this year. We will achieve at least 7% growth,” he said.

Mr. Jaishankar stressed that the vision of India as a trading power has now become credible.

He said it is worth examining India’s post-COVID-19 economic recovery.

He said many nations have spent heavily during the COVID-19 period.

“I would say knee-jerk … they were in a hurry to respond to the crisis situation. Therefore, they have not necessarily used their funds and resources wisely,” said Mr. Jaishanakar.

He said India is instead focusing on creating a safety net.

He was there, there was a program to give 80 crore people a free ration.

“No country in the world has done that,” he said.

There is a program to transfer money to the bank accounts of 40 million people.

He also commended India’s efforts to deal with the COVID-19 crisis. He said India was not producing masks and ventilators at the start of the pandemic. He said people don’t know about PPE kits.

“Not only could we manufacture what 1.3 billion people need, but we could also set up special treatment centers for people who have contracted COVID-19,” the minister said. India has been able to mass-produce COVID-19 vaccines.

“Vaccines for 1.3 billion people have been produced in India,” he said.

“I go on tours and see that people from several countries were not vaccinated because they did not have any. Countries that had everything but still people are not being vaccinated,” the minister said, adding that with continued efforts, India can fill the gap.

Mr Jaishankar also praised the growing ties between India and Saudi Arabia.

He said during the COVID-19 crisis, “We saw that our international friendships were also delivering results at this point.”

“Saudi Arabia was very helpful and provided oxygen. For two years COVID-19 was tested when the country was tested, but we got through,” Mr Jaishankar said.

Speaking on the key role that the Indian diaspora plays in relations between the two countries, Mr Jaishankar said: “You all have in many ways shaped the image of India and what the Saudis think of India and what we are.”

“Consciously or unconsciously, all of you together have built the overall Saudi perception of India through your achievements, contributions, profession and friendships. Your country will always be grateful for that,” he said.

“One of our foreign policy priorities is to ensure that our people are treated well abroad,” he said.

Speaking on the Vande Bharat Mission to evacuate Indians stranded in different countries during the COVID-19 crisis, Mr Jaishankar said: “We have brought back 70 million people from around the world as part of the Vande Bharat Mission. No one has done this, it is the largest evacuation and has been carried out during the Covid-19 pandemic. This is India the world sees today.”

During his interactions with the community, he spoke about the universalization of wellness and yoga.

“We would definitely encourage the spread of wellness and yoga,” he replied to a question.

He said that under the new education policy, India is striving for rapid expansion of higher education.

When asked about an Indian cultural center in Saudi Arabia, Mr Jaishankar said he would take the request into account.
