RALEIGH, NC (WNCN) — Spring events bring big businesses to downtown Raleigh, and local business leaders say that momentum will continue to increase.
The Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority’s 70th Mid-Atlantic Conference is being held this weekend in downtown Raleigh, attended by more than 5,000 people.
Spokesperson Ayana Hernandez said the conference will bring more than $4 million to the region.
“Because we’re such a large organization and we’re growing, Raleigh is one of those cities that can actually hold and host us,” Hernandez said. “Just the sisterhood and being together means so much.”
But there’s more – February’s stadium series saw more than 50,000 people at Carter Finley Stadium.
The fanfare raised $20 million in the local economy over the weekend, according to Visit Raleigh.
On April 1-2, the Dreamville music festival will bring together tens of thousands of people from across the country.
Kyle Touchstone, Raleigh’s director of economic development, says events like this create long-term growth and create a place where people want to put down roots.
“It was really busy at Raleigh,” Touchstone said. “Events like this really put Raleigh in the spotlight and really help us tell that story and attract businesses and talent to the region.”
For the AKA sorority, service goes beyond a dollar amount invested. They donated tens of thousands of personal care and comfort items to five long-term care facilities in Raleigh.
“Supporting local businesses and, as I mentioned, service and making sure we leave that impact of service,” Hernandez said.
