Gran Turismo 7: Polyphony Digital promises big economic changes in the April update

Gran Turismo 7 has been heavily criticized by its player base lately due to the game’s live service economy. Polyphony Digital’s latest sim racer was rated fairly well – Game Informer gave it an 8.75 out of 10 – but since its launch, the game’s credit system has come under heavy scrutiny, with players citing it as being based on encouraging microtransactions based.

Things got even worse for Gran Turismo 7 after the scheduled maintenance that was supposed to last two hours last week lasted more than 24 hours and the game was largely unplayable due to its constantly online nature. Additionally, the update resulting from this maintenance reduced the amount of credits earned after races that players used to farm credits due to the high car prices in Gran Turismo 7.

Now, Polyphony Digital President Kazunori Yamauchi has published a new post on PlayStation Blog apologizing to the fanbase and promising some big changes to the game economy over the next month.

“Thank you for your continued support and feedback on Gran Turismo 7, your voices have not gone unheard,” writes Yamauchi. “I would like to apologize for the frustration and confusion caused last week with our patch updates, which not only resulted in a server outage but also adjustments to the in-game economy that were made without a clear explanation for our community were made.

We know this is not the Gran Turismo experience you are expecting and We will be making a goodwill gesture in the form of an unpaid credit package of 1 million Cr. available to potentially affected players. You will see this hitting your accounts shortly. Make sure to log into the game before April 25th to get the credits.

The previously deployed patch update should fix an issue with inconsistent reward payouts within a portion of World Circuit Events. But in order to restore the intended balance and provide more accurate rewards based on time spent and completion, it was necessary to recalculate the reward system as a whole.”

According to Yamauchi, Polyphony Digital will release a “significant” patch in early April, which will increase the number of events and reintroduce a new reward system with greater balance.

Here’s a rundown of the updates that will go live starting in April:

  • Increase rewards by about 100% on average in events in the second half of the World Circuits.
  • Added high rewards for completing Circuit experience in all Gold/All Bronze results.
  • Increase in rewards in online races.
  • Add a total of eight new hour-long endurance race events to the missions. These also have higher reward settings.
  • Raised the cap on unpaid balances in player wallets from 20m Cr. up to 100 million cr.
  • Increase the range of used and legendary cars at any time.

Yamauchi says that between now and April some “additional patches” will add new cars and track layouts to the game, along with some other fixes. Yamauchi is also listed a few last minute updates the team is working onalthough the studio is unwilling to share details on when players can expect them:

  • Increase the payout value of limited-time rewards as we evolve as a live service.
  • More World Circuit Event additions.
  • Adding endurance races to missions, including 24 hour races.
  • Adding online time trials and awarding rewards based on the player’s difference to the best time.
  • Do it so cars can be sold.
