Gas prices, economy are not the only issues in the election this fall

I’m a retired retiree on a fixed income, so I understand the challenges of high inflation to my budget. I know many families are struggling because of high inflation. Suppose gas prices drop to a penny a gallon because Republicans won both the House and Senate – but we no longer have a functioning democracy?

If Social Security cuts along with Medicare and Medicaid, would cheaper gas be okay? What about a woman’s right to vote? Or which book would you like to read? Or be married to whoever you love, regardless of gender?

The economy isn’t the only thing on the ballot this fall.

be a good citizen

I just called to report that there’s a package thief on our block. I called 311 and got the police number, which wasn’t an emergency, so I called them.

I knew the thief was long gone and would not be caught, but I felt it my duty to report the thief, who had climbed over my neighbor’s fence to steal packages, and also from several other buildings in the area Block.

SEND LETTERS TO: [email protected] We want to hear from our readers. To be considered for publication, letters must include your full name, neighborhood or hometown, and a phone number for verification purposes. Letters should be a maximum of about 375 words.

I was told that I could not report it as I was not the victim of the theft and that my neighbors had to report it and describe the person. I said my neighbor was at work and couldn’t do this.

The police then asked me to notify my neighbor and give him a description of the thief. I said they hadn’t seen him, so my description made more sense than theirs. After that no comment.

I guess there’s no value in being a good citizen anymore?

No prisoner exchanges with Russia

I’ve followed with interest the arrest of WNBA basketball player Brittany Griner in Russia. She has claimed that the vape cartridges containing hash oil found in her luggage by Russian law enforcement were accidentally packed in her luggage. She has pleaded guilty to the crime in a Russian court. How credible these procedures are is speculative.

The Biden administration has offered the Russians a prisoner swap from Russian arms dealer Viktor Bout for Griner and US soldier Paul Whelan. As much as I feel the plight of these two Americans, I see no point in giving up Bout for them. Bout’s arms trade has resulted in the deaths of thousands of people. I don’t think the Biden administration will guarantee future lives won’t be risked by abandoning Bout.

Cubs show off their talent

Now that we’re nearing the Major League Baseball close, the Chicago Cubs appear to be playing their best baseball of the season. Is it just me, or does it seem like every Cub is showing their talent to lure a competing team into making a trade?

If they had that attitude from the start of the season, the Cubs would have been that competitive team.
