CHATTANOOGA, Tenn (WDEF) – The Tennessee Valley Federal Union does more than just catchy commercials.
They help local business owners and homeowners – especially those starting new.
This is how TVFCU drives our economy.
“The Tennessee Valley Federal Credit Union is a great story for Chattanooga and the Tennessee Valley,” said Todd Fortner, President and CEO. “We were founded in 1936 by 57 TVA employees here in Chattanooga. And we’ve now grown to more than 500 employees serving 17 counties in the Tennessee Valley.”
According to Fortner, TVFCU is one of the top auto lenders in the community.
“We booked more than 2,000 new home loans last year and we’re a great engine for local business loans,” he said. “We have an Idea Leap program that helps provide the capital small businesses need. And we ideally offer grants that help small businesses that are growing increase their payroll. There is a new Towneplace Suites in the Hixson area that we are funding. It’s going to be a 90 room hotel that will really boost the Hixson area economy and will be a real bonus for the people over there and a big boost for the city.”
The vast majority of the credit union’s 500 employees live in the Tennessee Valley.
“All of our decisions are made locally,” Fortner said. “The leadership team is here. All of those salaries stay in the Tennessee Valley, and those employees can contribute to the economy. These employees are also inspired to volunteer in the community. We have a program that allows them to volunteer for up to eight hours, paid for by the company. And we have many employees who have taken the opportunity to work for nonprofit organizations and help the community become a better place to live.”
According to Fortner, TVFCU also supports Junior Achievement locally.
“And we have certified staff to teach personal finance courses,” he said. “We currently have two people at Howard High School who teach personal finance to help these people get off to a better start financially as they graduate and move on in life.
