BATON ROUGE – The old Chase Tower in downtown Baton Rouge has almost completely been renovated.
What was once purely office space at I Rivermark Center has been transformed into a multi-purpose building offering luxury apartments, amenities, offices and commercial space. Its sister tower, II Rivermark Centre, is entirely commercial.
“By the middle of this year we expect very good occupancy rates in our office and residential buildings,” said Mike Wampold, a developer who bought both buildings years ago.
Bringing more living space into the city center is not only the goal of Wampold, but also of the Downtown Development District. More people living downtown means businesses will thrive.
“Having people here helps us keep a 24/7 active city. This is really good for our economy. It’s just really good to have people living here,” Whitney Hoffman-Sayal told DDD.
According to Hoffman-Sayal, downtown living space grew 25% from 2010 to 2020. It’s a trend that many business owners and developers hope will continue.
“The city’s elixir of life is the inner city,” said Wampold.
Wampold added that the finishing touches for the I Rivermark Center will be completed in the next 90 days. One, two and three-room apartments can be rented on floors eight to 21.
