DE SOTO, Kan. — It’s been another year of ups and downs for some, but it started off strong for Anabel Sanches, owner of Anabel’s Maker’s Market in De Soto.
“This year was great for me at the beginning,” said Sanches. “And suddenly I had the feeling that October, November just came a little differently.”
As Sanches tries to move forward, she also feels obligated to take care of other businesses in her area.
“Not only do I have my responsibilities, but I have 40 other small businesses here that I feel I have to help,” she said.
Despite the year-end slowdown, De Soto is showing signs of growth.
A city vote on Tuesday night resulted in approval of the first phase of plans to advance Panasonic’s proposed battery plant.
It’s the kind of project that, according to Don Graves, the US assistant secretary of commerce, will boost both local and national economies.
“What I think you’re going to see in Kansas City and throughout the Midwest is continued strong and stable growth,” Graves said. “Like I said, the manufacturing growth that drives a lot of events in the Midwest has been very strong,” he said.
