JOHNSTOWN, Pa. – Increased tax payments and free care resulted in a $5,031,351 increase in Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center's financial impact on the Johnstown community in 2023 compared to 2022.
The 2023 Community Benefit Report was released online Monday and shows the hospital's continued impact on the health and economic vitality of Laurel Highlands. The annual report describes the hospital's various actions to support the health and economic vitality of the Greater Johnstown community as part of its mission to make communities healthier.
“As a leading healthcare provider in the greater Johnstown area, (Conemaugh Memorial) is committed to providing quality care close to home, investing in the overall well-being of our region and having a positive impact on the people we serve,” the CEO said of Rodney D. Reid Hospital said in a news release. “This year’s report demonstrates our continued efforts to provide compassionate care – both inside and outside our hospital walls.”
The report shows the hospital contributed $61,549,646 to the local economy, up from $56,518,295 in 2022, but takes into account a number of mixed factors.
For example, the press release states that the $24,255,037 in uncompensated and charitable care demonstrates Conemaugh's “ongoing commitment to ensuring that everyone has access to care, regardless of their ability to pay.”
This amount represents a whopping 60% increase over 2022 and was offset by lower financial contributions in other areas.
Community Benefits Program contributions totaled $7,086,785, decreasing 37% compared to 2022. The program invests in recruitment and vocational training to create jobs in the region.
The for-profit hospital paid $30,207,284 in local and state taxes while continuing to support local activities and organizations serving the region, including the American Heart Association, the 1889 Foundation, The United Way of Laurel Highlands, the Highlands Health Clinic, Cambria County Drug Coalition, Tomahawks Hockey, Johnstown Mill Rats and the Community Veterans Initiative.
In 2023, Conemaugh Memorial added 139 providers – including physicians, physician assistants and certified nurse practitioners – in anesthesiology, cardiology, critical care, family and emergency medicine, gastroenterology, internal medicine and pain medicine, neurology, obstetrics/gynecology, occupational medicine, psychiatry, Radiation oncology and more.
But total employment and payroll remained relatively constant last year at about 2,400 workers and nearly $230 million, respectively.
