China's economy: Foreign direct investment falls to lowest level since 1993, with an additional $33 billion in 2023
Foreign direct investment in China rose last year to its lowest level since the early 1990s, underscoring the challenges facing the country as Beijing seeks more foreign investment to support its economy.
China's direct investment liabilities in its balance of payments rose by $33 billion last year, down 82% from 2022, according to data from the State Administration of Foreign Exchange's Bloomberg Terminal released on Sunday. This measure of new foreign investment in the country – which tracks money flows linked to foreign-owned companies in China – has fallen to its lowest level since 1993.
