Spurred by “profound” technological innovation and entrepreneurial activity, China’s artificial intelligence (AI) industry has consolidated apparent incremental momentum in terms of scale growth and comprehensive expansion of fields of application and accelerated integration with the real economy, according to a report published at the sixth World Closing Ceremony Intelligence Congress (WIC) on Saturday in the north Chinese city of Tianjin.

The “deep” technological innovation refers to innovation activities based on basic research and R&D, focusing on core technologies, with the aim of promoting future industries and building an autonomous and controllable technology system that guarantees the sustainable improvement of the international competitiveness of Chinese industry report claimed.

“The development of China’s AI technology industry has a distinctive feature that is order-oriented. For example, AI will be widely used in poverty alleviation, fighting the COVID-19 epidemic and achieving the country’s ‘double carbon’ goal,” said Liu Gang, director of the Nankai Institute of Economics and chief economist at the Chinese Institute of New Generation AI Development Strategies, during the congress.

This mission-oriented development has brought new vitality to the development of the AI industry and deep integration with the real economy, Liu added.

In recent years, the development of AI in China has been widely and enthusiastically embraced by the public, Liu said.

In the field of smart connected vehicles, a survey by the institute found that 85 percent of those who have tested self-driving cars believe that most self-driving technologies have surpassed or even expect to surpass the driving level of most drivers.

More respondents said they trust platform companies, including Baidu and Huawei, which now offer autonomous driving technologies and products.

Additionally, 90 percent of respondents expect the country to accelerate the adoption of autonomous driving laws and regulations.

“Driven by ‘deep’ technological innovation, China is becoming a global technology powerhouse at an accelerating pace and is gradually emerging as an economic powerhouse,” Liu said.
