British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak was confronted during an interview with the story of a woman who has been forced to sit in the dark because she cannot afford a lightbulb amid the country’s economic crisis. Speaking to ` Breakfast, Rishi Sunak was asked about the UK’s cost of living crisis, using the example of a Cornish woman named Nikki.

` presenter Jon Kay said: “She works as a carer, she’s paid £10.15 an hour and her kitchen is in the dark this week. She can’t afford a lightbulb for the kitchen until her daughter gets paid next week. She works in welfare.
“Hard to believe this is coming to the UK in 2023, isn’t it? You were Chancellor, you were Chief Secretary to the Treasury. Now you are Prime Minister. I mean, your fingerprints are everywhere in this economy, aren’t they?” the moderator added.

To which Rishi Sunak replied: “I am actually proud that after my appointment as Prime Minister, among other things, we have taken some difficult decisions elsewhere, for example decided to strengthen the profits of the largest companies given the circumstances in which we find ourselves to tax in,” adding, “If you’ll just let me explain what we’re trying to do to help. We’re using that money to help people in these circumstances, we’re actually putting more money into social care, specifically.”

“I want to make sure we’re helping Nikki and Nikki should know that we’re putting billions of pounds more into social care everywhere and that will help ensure she’s well paid. We are making sure that Nikki’s energy bill of around £1500 is met by the government,” the PM added.
