BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) – A rough economy is causing problems for numerous companies across the country.
The list of restaurants in the Baton Rouge area that will close their doors in 2022 grew longer. Velvet Cactus abruptly closed its only Baton Rouge location on the Jefferson Highway just before the New Year.
The restaurant’s Facebook post announcing the closure blamed the rising costs of running the business.
“We appreciate the love our patrons have shown us over the years and the care and dedication our employees have shown to the business from start to finish,” the post reads.
The struggle for openness is intense for several restaurants in the area.
Elvondae Raybon is the owner of Pit and Peel in Baton Rouge. He says to keep prices down they had to add catering and a food truck to make more money.
“It’s always about being fair to the customer and also making a profit so that I can grow,” said Raybon.
However, former employees of Velvet Cactus head into the new year unemployed.
According to the owner, prices have increased by 20 percent in recent years. The management decided to close immediately after the holidays.
The owner tells WAFB it was a tough decision, but they had no choice.
As workers entered windows and swapped out produce, another chain of restaurants stopped by to provide employment opportunities. The company plans to redeem unused gift cards at its New Orleans location.
