The US Embassy in Kyiv will reopen soon
WASHINGTON (Nexstar) – For the first time since Russia invaded Ukraine, senior US officials traveled to Kyiv to meet with President Volodmyr Zelenskyy.
Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin spend three hours meeting with Ukraine’s President and pledge their continued support for the war-torn country.
“We think that was an important moment,” said Blinken.
He said the meeting between senior US and Ukrainian officials came at a time when Russia is failing in its primary goal — “to completely subjugate Ukraine, to take away her sovereignty, to take away her independence.” That failed.”
The problems for Russia are not just on the battlefield, Blinken said.
“A military that is dramatically underperforming. An economy in shambles as a result of sanctions resulting from a mass exodus from Russia,” he said.
Officials also announced that US diplomats will return to Ukraine starting next week. However, the reopening of the US embassy in Kyiv will take longer.
Nevertheless, Russia’s attack on Ukraine continues. Part of the meeting Blinken and Austin had with Zelenskyy revolved around the kind of help Ukraine will need to move forward.
“As this fight unfolds, their needs will change. So, as those requirements change, we like to stay ahead of the curve,” said Austin.
As part of the pledge for continued assistance, the US announced an additional US$300 million in military aid and US$165 million in ammunition sales.
