The Indonesian government has called on members of the Group of 20 (G20) to gather a global fund initiative for arts and culture revitalization to develop cultural industries.
The initiative was presented Monday by Hilmar Farid, Director-General for Culture at the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research and Technology, during the G20 Culture Ministers’ Meeting (G20 CMM) in Magelang Regency, Indonesia’s Central Java province.
“Cultures are not just about cultural artifacts or objects, but also about cultural actors or artists who create, nurture and preserve the cultures,” Farid said, adding that G20 members listened to the voice and aspirations of cultural workers hear and a policy that can accommodate their aspirations, the Xinhua News Agency reported.
He said the G20 CMM is expected to strengthen the role of culture in efforts to preserve the planet, he said.
“This can be achieved through real action, so that sustainable living practices can support economic recovery,” he added.
Education, Culture, Research and Technology Minister Nadiem Anwar Makarim said in the opening speech of the G20-CMM on Sunday that Indonesia is committed to stepping up cooperation on the practice of sustainable living and accelerating the strengthening and development of cultural industries.
