While the leisure and hospitality industry added just 11,000 jobs in January, the critical services sector posted its 36th consecutive month of employment growth. Post-pandemic, service companies have benefited from Americans' strong desire to spend money on experiences.

As demand remains high, a new bar and restaurant in Minneapolis is feeling the impact.

Jillian Hiscock is about a month away from opening her A Bar of Their Own, which will feature women-only sporting events. The concept, inspired by The Sports Bra in Portland, Oregon, has garnered overwhelming support in the Twin Cities community since Hiscock floated the idea last spring and ran a crowdfunding campaign to get it off the ground .

The same was true of the hiring effort: Hiscock received 150 applications for 25 to 30 open positions within two days.

“Since things opened back up [following the pandemic]“We had a lot of people whose relationship with work changed fundamentally,” she said. “Showing up and just doing something for someone who you feel doesn’t care about them as a human being is less interesting to people now because we all know how quickly that can be taken away.”

People want a better work-life balance, she said.

“People were really excited because they saw it not just as another job, but as a chance to be part of something bigger,” she said.
