International travelers could treat themselves to a little more peace and quiet

Air New Zealand’s new sleeping capsules.
If you’ve ever tried sleeping in economy class, chances are you’ve encountered a few difficulties – unless you’ve got a whole row to yourself, of course. This is especially challenging when it comes to Redeye flights and international travel. It’s one thing to stop sleeping for a few hours before you reach your destination, but an overnight flight of eight hours or more poses a much greater challenge — like a flight between the United States and New Zealand, for example.
A recent announcement from Air New Zealand could shake things up dramatically when it comes to international travel. As reported by the Washington Post, the airline will offer several bunk beds for sleeping that international travelers can book from 2024.
Air New Zealand initially announced the plan for these sleeping pods – known as Economy Skynest – in early 2020. (You can probably find out why the launch date was delayed.) At the time, Nikki Goodman — the airline’s general manager of customer experience — addressed the pod’s appeal.
“We envision a future flight experience where an economy class customer on long-haul flights can book the economy Skynest in addition to their economy seat, get some rest and arrive at their destination ready to fly,” Goodman said in a statement. Each module contains six bunk beds.
According to the Post, these pods will launch in September 2024. Last year, Taylor Rains wrote on Insider about testing the Skynest system. “I found the beds to be comfortable and spacious and proved to be a realistic sleeping solution on long-haul trips,” she wrote — giving long-haul travelers something to look forward to in 2024.
