Abrams: Georgians don’t have to choose between “strong economy and extremist agenda.”

Democratic gubernatorial candidate Stacy Abrams on Sunday said Georgians “didn’t have to make a choice between a strong economy and an extremist agenda” in the upcoming election, adding that her opponent, Governor Brian Kemp (R), wanted a “hard right” strive agenda” in the state.

Abrams told NBC’s “Meet the Press” host Chuck Todd that Kemp is an “extremist” who has relaxed gun laws and enforced a six-week abortion ban that went into effect last month, a measure she says 72 percent of Georgians do not support it.

“Brian Kemp is doing an excellent job of showing that he is an extremist who has a hard right-wing agenda that is not in the best interests of Georgia,” Abrams said.

Kemp and Abrams will face off in a highly anticipated rematch in November. In 2018, Kemp beat the Democratic nominee in a close race.

Abrams ran unopposed in their primary while Kemp easily won his against Trump-backed opponent, former Sen. David Perdue (R-Ga.).

So far, polls show a close race, with Kemp just ahead of Abrams at 48 percent to 43 percent.

With inflation high for 40 years and a likely recession, Kemp is leading a campaign accusing Abrams and the Democrats of deteriorating the economy.

But Abrams said Sunday she was proposing “a comprehensive plan for how we build our economy and protect our liberties.”

“What people are realizing and why he’s staying below 50 percent is that Georgians are realizing that we don’t have to choose between a strong economy and an extremist agenda,” the candidate told NBC. “People will continue to pay attention to his extreme position on abortion, his extreme position on guns, his extreme position on refusing to take any action to help the people of Georgia.

“We are suffering from a health crisis and a housing crisis,” she added. “And the more they pay attention, the more they’ll realize that his highest water mark was that first day.”
