Washington Post congressional reporter Marianna Sotomayor said on ABC’s This Week Sunday that it may be too late for Democrats on the economy as the midterms approach.
Host Martha Raddatz asked the ABC panel about a Saturday New York Times report on President Biden potentially sitting out 2024.
“That’s not a good headline,” Raddatz said of the piece, which was captioned, “Should Biden Run in 2024? Democratic whispers of ‘no’ are beginning to rise.”
A New York Times reporter said in May that many Democrats don’t believe Biden will run again in 2024.

BIDEN FRUSHED WITH HELPS FOR WALKING BACK STATEMENTS, MAKES HE LOOK WEAK: REPORT
ABC News political director Rick Klein said the White House isn’t “too concerned” about it because the “whispers” aren’t “shouts” and “people don’t say it very loudly.”
He noted that there was no obvious person to step in and that not many Democrats believed Vice President Kamala Harris would be the right choice. He also said some Democrats believe Biden beat former President Donald Trump in 2020 and that he could do it again.

“They will continue to signal that they get it when it comes to inflation and gas prices and they believe that the reputation of the President is closely tied to how people live their lives and when they can show progress they show that he caught the moment. show he understands, show he’s tackling it, they think the numbers can get better enough that half-time might not be quite as bad as it’s looking at the moment and that’s going to change the prospects around 2024.” said Klein.
Sotomayor said the president changed his tone a bit with inflation.
“In the beginning, a lot of Democrats said, hey, look, the economy is doing great, it’s the best it’s been in, you know, a record number of years. And people didn’t feel that. People said why are you telling me this? well if all these prices go up?” she mused.

“So you see the Democrats are shifting the message a little bit to talk more about it and have that empathy, but is that a little bit too late. But it might be a little late for a lot of these people who say we need help now,” she continued.
Inflation, gas prices and the economy remain front and center in the 2022 midterm elections as the national average touched $5.01 a gallon of gasoline on Sunday.
