OTTAWA, Ontario – (BUSINESS WIRE) – Nov. July 2021–

The green economy will seek to continue its r -id growth through an infusion of talented young people as Canada begins to recover from the COVID-19 pandemic. To support this continued advancement, BioTalent Canada announced today that Environment and Climate Change Canada has renewed its funding support for the Science Horizons Youth Internship Program. The $ 3 million commitment will fund 103 internships.

Science Horizons provides wage subsidies to environmental and clean technology employers for hiring new college graduates. This renewal notice comes weeks after BioTalent Canada published its Growing the Bio-Economy: Youth in Focus report highlighting the success of Science Horizons.

“Science Horizons’ wage grant has been a consistently successful program since 2017,” said Rob Henderson, President and CEO of BioTalent Canada. “Employers in the green economy recognize the high return on investment of the youngest graduates. And as companies continue to operate on razor-sharp budgets, programs like Science Horizons ease the financial constraints of hiring talent who can make valuable contributions. “

Between 2019 and 2021, more than 80 coast-to-coast employers hired young graduates through Science Horizons. And what started as an internship became permanent for 81% of the participants.

One of the main reasons behind the success rate is the immediate impact new hires have on your business. When the hands-on summer program was suspended by COVID-19 restrictions, Juno Garrah, newly hired by Water Rangers, went outside online and helped the organization reach a wider audience than ever before.

“As a small social enterprise, we would not have been able to hire Juno without the grant from BioTalent Canada – and without her creative thinking, we would not have ad -ted to the new format,” said Kat Kavanagh, founder and executive director of Water Rangers. “Youngsters like Juno bring a different kind of energy for change that can really move you forward.”

To help build Canada’s green economy, Science Horizons Youth Internship offers a wage subsidy of up to 80% for full-time internships of six to twelve months in environmental STEM positions related to the green economy.
