On Sunday March 27th, the 94th Academy Awards were broadcast worldwide so countries around the world could tune in. As always, legendary celebrities took to the red carpet to dazzle and amaze with their stunning looks. At the 2022 Oscars, sci-fi adventure Dune swept the board with six Oscars and musical drama CODA stunned the crowds by knocking out best picture from favorites Dune and The Power of the Dog. Aside from the awards shows themselves, the 2022 Oscars were an eventful evening. Will Smith slapped Chris Rock, Hannibal star Anthony Hopkins danced the night away at the post-Oscar party and Jamie Lee Curtis promoted animal adoption to honor the late Betty White.
As with any Academy Awards, there have been some hits and misses when it comes to clothing. Celebrities strutted in floaty dresses, smart tuxedos and — in Kristen Stewart’s case — some ill-chosen cropped shorts. Some celebrities stole the show; Elliot Page turned heads looking elegant and handsome in his Gucci tuxedo, Zendaya stunned in a flattering Valentino outfit and Jessica Chastain looked radiant like a real Disney princess. However, every show-stopping outfit has its terrifying counterpart. Here are the worst dressed celebrities of the 2022 Oscars.
Maya Rudolph

‘Good Place’ star Maya Rudolph launches the public infamy in a fringed neon orange Valentino kaftan that buries her figure and makes her look like a Monsters, Inc. extra. Last year, Rudolph won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Character Voice-Over Performance as Connie the Hormone Monstress on Netflix’s coming-of-age animated drama Big Mouth. Rudolph attended the Oscars to support her co-stars and creators of Liquorice Pizza; Paul Thomas Anderson’s romantic drama was nominated for Best Picture, Best Original Screenplay and Best Director but unfortunately lost to CODA, Belfast and Jane Campion respectively.
Kristen Stewart

As previously mentioned, Kristen Stewart made the bold choice of wearing shorts by Chanel complemented by a button down blouse and a smart blazer. Not exactly the right ensemble for a professional awards show, but Stewart has always been something of a rebel. On the contrary, Stewart’s hair and makeup look exquisite, which leaves a lot to be desired given the decidedly overbearing outfit. Kristen Stewart was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress, marking her outstanding performance as Diana, Princess of Wales in Pablo Larraín’s psychological drama Spencer. Unfortunately, Stewart lost to fellow competitor Jessica Chastain.
Julianne Hough

Julianne Hough’s choice of clothing might not look particularly bad, but compared to her other nominees, Hough struggled to create the wow factor and lacked the designer chic that wowed viewers. Deciding to keep it simple, she wore a yellow off-the-shoulder dress that was accessorized with a rhinestone-buckled mini clutch by Bouquet by Roger Vivier. Overall, Hough just looks elegant – “simple” like the adverb – and nothing more can be appreciated. In 2015, the Footloose star won a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Choreography for a performance performed on Dancing with the Stars — an honor he shares with Derek Hough and Tessandra Chavez.
Uma Thurman

Batman & Robin star Uma Thurman wore a yin-yang effect ensemble that combined a buttoned white silk shirt and long black silk skirt by Bottega Veneta. Thurman will receive redemption points for paying homage to her pulp fiction character, Mia Wallace, who wore the same white shirt and black pants combo. Their main downside is simplicity; The Oscars are an excuse to go all out, but Thurman took a backseat, overshadowed by bigger and better looks. Joining her for the best actor awards ceremony were her Pulp Fiction co-stars, John Travolta and Samuel L. Jackson; Thurman and Travolta recreated their famous twist contest scene from Quentin Tarantino’s 1994 crime drama.
Zoe Kravitz

It just feels wrong to have Zoë Kravitz on the worst dressed list, but she does. Kravitz recently landed the role of Batman anti-heroine Catwoman in Matt Reeves’ The Batman alongside Robert Pattinson as the titular character. It seems obvious that Kravitz played it safe, opting for a pink strapless dress adorned with a crooked bow by Saint Laurent by Anthony Vaccarello and accompanied by a diamond necklace and earrings by Kwiat. Her dainty pastel pink shows a drastic departure from Catwoman’s signature sleek black leather body, but it feels less imaginative and daring than previous styles Kravitz has become known for. Despite not being nominated for an Academy Awards in 2022, viewers can expect The Batman to sweep the board at the 95th Annual Academy Awards.
Maggie Gyllenhaal

Jake Gyllenhaal’s sister Maggie Gyllenhaal might be the worst dressed of them all (sorry Maggie). Gyllenhaal wore a black column dress by Schiaparelli Haute Couture – adorned with linear, eye-catching gold accents on the front of the dress and an off-the-shoulder scoop neckline. As conventionally glamorous as it may be, the internet ruthlessly compared Maggie to “Minecraft Steve” and poked fun at the unusual, ill-fitting, and downright boxy design. Maggie Gyllenhaal was nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay for her film The Lost Daughter, but ultimately lost to CODA’s Sian Heder.
Jessie Buckley

Speaking of Maggie Gyllenhaal, who made her directorial debut on The Lost Daughter, was joined by Irish actress Jessie Buckley as the younger version of Olivia Coleman’s character Leda Caruso. Buckley stormed the red carpet in a pink Erdem dress with a plunging neckline and cathedral train, but chose to ditch the jewelry and keep it minimalist. To be honest, that decision was in poor taste, especially given that Buckley’s collarbone appears remarkably bare — as does her wrists — and the muted pink hue looks dull and graceful. Jessie Buckley was nominated for Best Supporting Actress but went home empty-handed after losing to West Side Story’s Ariana DeBose.
Rita Moreno

Rita Moreno knows how to make a statement. The Puerto Rican-born actress wore an elegant black Carolina Herrera gown with dramatic sculptural sleeves and completed the look with crystal-embellished black flats, a pair of silver Verdura earrings and a feathered headpiece. Unfortunately, Moreno’s outfit doesn’t look as stylishly unique as it does look… odd, to say the least. Still, she looks gorgeous and youthful for a 90-year-old with her simple, elegant makeup and a stunning figure. Rita Moreno attended the 2022 Oscars to support fellow West Side Story co-star Ariana DeBose in her Best Supporting Actress nomination. Of course, Moreno was over the moon when DeBose beat the competition and took home the Oscar.
Nicole Kidman

Considering Bombshell star Nicole Kidman’s previous Oscar looks, the 2022 edition was a serious downgrade. Kidman opted for a strapless silk gown with a plunging V-neckline and iridescent train. She paired the dress with Harry Winston jewelry – including an Eagle Yellow Diamond necklace from the New York Collection. This outfit wasn’t so unbearable, but it would be so much better if it wasn’t for the puffy waistline that completely destroys Kidman’s waistline and distracts from the finer details. In a word, it looks messy, which is a real shame. Kidman was nominated for Best Actress for her role in Being the Ricardos, competing against Jessica Chastain, Olivia Colman, Penélope Cruz and Kristen Stewart. In the end, The Eyes of Tammy Faye star Jessica Chastain won the gold.
Amy Schumer

Amy Schumer was joined by co-hosts Wanda Sykes and Regina Hall, who bestowed not one but three comedian presenters on the 94th Academy Awards after not having a presenter at all for three straight years. Another minimalist outfit, Schumer arrived at the 2022 Oscars in a navy and black velvet dress with a bow and embroidered broken crystals by Oscar de la Renta. Tragically, another “meh” look, especially when compared to the likes of Regina Hall and Wanda Sykes, who consistently blow audiences away with every costume change. As Amy Schumer stood alongside Sykes and Hall to give speeches, she looked extraordinarily ordinary, as if she’d mistaken her Oscar invitation for a last-minute message.
Naomi Scott

Oscar presenter and Aladdin star Naomi Scott opted for a longer version of a purple silk Duchesse gown, accessorized with a structured and embroidered cape from Fendi’s Spring 2022 couture collection. Unfortunately, it would have been a more flattering fit if it had been the shorter version, which accentuates the legs and looks more polished than an overgrown dress that buries Scott’s petite figure and feels dated. Scott co-presented the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature – awarded to Disney’s Encanto – along with Cinderella star Lily James and upcoming ‘The Little Mermaid’ star Halle Bailey.
Jacob Elordi

Australian actor and Euphoria star Jacob Elordi attended the 94th Annual Academy Awards to present the Oscar for Best Visual Effects alongside West Side Story star Rachel Zegler. Elordi opted for a classic tuxedo (as he does at every other awards show), which is perhaps the most predictably boring outfit a male (or female, of course) Oscar nominee could find. Nothing fancy here, but as long as you’re over 6ft and look reasonably dashing you can get away with tuxedos for any occasion.
Timothy Chalamet

Incredibly, news outlets everywhere are raving that Timothée Chalamet went topless at the 94th Academy Awards, claiming, though he was blunt, that he “rewrote the dress code.” Chalamet wore a cropped jacket – covered in lustrous lace – from Louis Vuitton’s women’s 2022 collection. At the very least, the statement can be described as “fashionable” and “gender-neutral” — terms that sound nicer and more progressive than saying that Timothée Chalamet almost showed nipples at the Oscars. He was nominated for Best Actor but lost to Will Smith’s King Richard.
Billie Eilish

Unsurprisingly, alternative pop star Billie Eilish walked the red carpet in a black Gucci dress oozing with tiered ruffles to match her signature goth fashion. She usually opts for menswear-inspired suits, but Eilish clearly envisioned an inspired change for the 94th Annual Academy Awards — and rightly so — considering she walked away with an Oscar. Eilish and her brother Finneas received the award for best original song from the latest James Bond escapade, No Time To Die. Unfortunately, the off-putting fact that her Gucci dress resembles an oversized garbage bag makes it difficult to focus on winning the Oscars.
