Just a few weeks ago, former Boy Meets World star Ben Savage announced that he was running for a seat in Congress. Savage hopes to take over the 30th district seat, currently held by Rep. Adam Schiff, in the 2024 election. The real question is why do all these celebrities choose to be politicians?
From Hollywood to the Oval Office with former President Ronald Reagan to the Kanye 2020 campaign, these celebrities were sick of the red carpets and instead wanted one of the most powerful positions in the nation. Though many may have forgotten that Reagan rose to fame as an actor from the late 1930s to early 1960s. As the 40th President of the United States, he wowed voters with the well-known charm he portrayed in films. Reagan seemed to like this idea of being able to get out of a working set to make more serious decisions for an entire country.
It seems Reagan’s charm hasn’t spread to everyone, especially 1994 New York gubernatorial nominee Howard Stern. Stern has a clear history as a rather intimidating person, with his talk show Howard Stern where he crossed the line with most of his guests by demeaning their careers or their looks. So what would make Stern the top candidate for governor this year? According to Reason Magazine, Stern made three promises; reinstate the death penalty, stagger tolls to reduce traffic and carry out road works into the night. Despite dropping his bid, Stern made the list of stars who did not make the job.
Then we have the infamous Donald Trump, who not only became the 45th President but was also known as a businessman on his show The Apprentice. After running and winning the 2016 election with his slogan “Make America Great Again,” Donald Trump demonstrated his lack of knowledge and skills in running a country. Although many believed that his business leadership skills would help create a better economy. With many downfalls Trump has endured, including being the first president to be impeached twice while in office, his loss in his attempt at a second term in 2020 not only turned into one of the most liberating victories for half of the Landes, but also outrageous for the other half. After his tenure, Trump led a group of people who then made history by raiding the Capitol on January 6, 2020. Thankfully, when someone who has been in the public eye for so long portrayed a tough businessman, many had seen the repercussions of the nation.
The most memorable campaign was Kanye West with his 2020 presidential campaign. After entering the race as an independent, West had held his most famous rally in North Charleston, South Carolina, according to Fox News. Many filmed a major nervous breakdown in which he exposed his ex-wife Kim Kardashian and revealed secrets about his children. Of course, that could be his idea of what Americans needed at the time, a clearly unstable individual unwilling to help. Despite still having several supporters behind him after the blowout, West did not make it to the Oval Office this year but plans to continue campaigning in the 2024 election.
What makes someone whose character is raising many of us, Cory Matthews, believe that he can run for such a prominent position of power and change our future? Will Ben Savage continue his campaign and prove that fame has nothing to do with having the skills and knowledge to run for Congress against several people who have spent their lives preparing for that position? Or will the “Ye” effect take over his campaign?
